That millennial generation that everyone has an opinion about is not exactly young anymore, and it seems they are doing some things differently. Studies show that they are actually staying married, at least more so than the previous baby boomer generation.
From 2008 to 2016, the divorce rate actually dropped 18 percent according to the University of Maryland sociologist Philip Cohen. He discovered that marriages that happen today have a much better chance of lasting than marriages did ten years ago.
“The change among young people is particularly striking,” says sociology professor Susan Brown. It seems that some people are getting married later in life after they have a bit of education and stability. Others are choosing not to get married at all.
We do know that divorce is still going to occur. For a variety of reasons, it is sometimes the best route a couple can take moving forward. Emy A. Cordano is ready to help when you need a Salt Lake City divorce attorney.
What Happens Now?
If a divorce is going to happen, you need to secure an attorney to help you through the process. Please note that the state of Utah has a 30-day waiting period on divorces and they mandate that couples go to at least one mediation session before the divorce can be completed. There is simply too much at stake. A skilled attorney can walk you through the following issues:
- Separation of assets : all of your marital property is going to be divided between you. This can become complicated for longer marriages or marriages in which you jointly acquired many assets. This can include houses, other real estate, vehicles, joint bank and retirement accounts, furniture, and more. The Utah courts want to see close to a 50-50 division of assets.
- Spousal Maintenance : also known as alimony, these payments may be required to assist the spouse with lesser means. Sometimes these are temporary payments to allow for one spouse time to get a job or attend job training. Other times these payments can be permanent. This, too, often depends on the length of the marriage.
- Child custody and payments : divorces can become much more emotional if there are minor children involved. It needs to be decided who will have joint and legal custody or whether it will be shared. If one spouse has sole physical custody, a visitation schedule needs to be worked out. Child support payments will need to be arranged as well.
